Overview

On the eve of June 28th, 2011 Swedish journalists Martin Schibbye and Johan Persson put everything at stake by illegally crossing the border from Somalia into Ethiopia. After months of research, planning and failed attempts, they were finally on their way to report on how the ruthless hunt for oil effected the population of the isolated and conflict-ridden Ogaden region. Five days later they lay wounded in the desert sand, shot and captured by the Ethiopian army. But when their initial reportage died, another story began. A story about lawlessness, propaganda and global politics. After a Kafkaesque trial they were sentenced to eleven years in prison for terrorism. And they were far from alone. Their cellmates were journalists, writers and politicians persecuted for not bowing down to dictatorship. Their reportage about oil was transformed into a story about ink, and their daily lives turned into a fight for survival inside the notorious Kality prison in Addis Ababa.

The 2019 film "438 Days" is a thought-provoking and intense drama that tells the true story of Swedish journalists Martin Schibbye and Johan Persson, who embarked on a perilous journey to expose the harsh realities of the Ogaden region in Ethiopia. The movie masterfully weaves together the complexities of their story, from the initial thrill of investigative journalism to the brutal consequences of their capture and imprisonment. As the narrative unfolds, the film sheds light on the darker aspects of global politics, propaganda, and the unwavering courage of those who dare to challenge oppressive regimes.

The film's strongest aspect lies in its ability to balance the personal and political dimensions of the story, creating a sense of urgency and emotional resonance that keeps the viewer invested in the characters' plight. The cinematography is stark and unflinching, capturing the harsh conditions of the Ethiopian desert and the bleakness of the Kality prison. The performances of the lead actors are convincing and nuanced, conveying the emotional toll of their ordeal and the unbreakable bond that forms between them. As the story progresses, the film raises important questions about the role of journalism in holding those in power accountable and the sacrifices that come with speaking truth to power.

One of the most striking aspects of "438 Days" is its thought-provoking exploration of the themes of freedom, censorship, and the human cost of political oppression. The film highlights the disturbing reality of journalists and writers being persecuted for their work, and the ways in which authoritarian regimes use propaganda and manipulation to maintain control. Through the characters' experiences, the movie conveys the psychological and emotional toll of imprisonment, as well as the resilience and solidarity that can form among those who are fighting for a common cause. While the film's pacing may feel slow at times, the payoff is well worth the investment, as the story builds towards a powerful and emotional conclusion that will leave viewers moved and inspired. Overall, "438 Days" is a gripping and timely drama that is sure to resonate with anyone who values freedom of expression and the importance of a free press.
