Almost Heroes
Overview
Two hapless explorers lead an ill-fated 1804 expedition through the Pacific Northwest in a hopeless, doomed effort to reach the Pacific Ocean before Lewis and Clark.

A Forgotten Foray into the Pacific Northwest

The film's strongest aspect is the chemistry between its leads, with Chris Farley bringing his signature physical comedy and Matthew Perry providing a more subdued, straight-man counterpart. Their banter and interactions are occasionally amusing, and their characters' misadventures are sometimes entertaining. However, the script fails to provide them with enough substantial material to work with, resulting in a meandering narrative that struggles to find its footing. The supporting cast, including Eugene Levy and Kevin Dunn, is wasted in underwritten roles that add little to the story. The film's attempts at humor often feel forced, relying on slapstick comedy and silly antics rather than clever writing or witty dialogue.
Despite its shortcomings, Almost Heroes does have some redeeming qualities. The film's cinematography is occasionally stunning, capturing the breathtaking beauty of the Pacific Northwest. The production design and costumes are also noteworthy, effectively transporting the viewer to the early 19th century. Additionally, the film's themes of perseverance and friendship are admirable, even if they are not fully developed. Overall, while Almost Heroes is not a complete failure, it is a disappointing and unremarkable film that fails to leave a lasting impression. Fans of Chris Farley and Matthew Perry may find some enjoyment in their performances, but others may find themselves checking their watches as the movie plods along. With a more focused script and tighter pacing, Almost Heroes could have been a memorable and enjoyable comedy; as it stands, it is a skippable, forgettable experience.
