Hardwired to Disappoint: A Sci-Fi Thriller That Falls Short

WatchListHQSep 7, 2025
The 2009 science fiction thriller "Hardwired" had all the ingredients to be a gripping and thought-provoking film, with its intriguing premise of a revolutionary brain implant that raises questions about the ethics of emerging technologies and the consequences of playing with fire when it comes to human enhancement. Unfortunately, the movie fails to deliver on its promising concept, succumbing to a multitude of problems that make it a lackluster viewing experience. The film's narrative is predictable and formulaic, with characters that are poorly developed and lack any real depth or complexity. The dialogue is often clunky and clichéd, with the actors struggling to elevate the subpar material they're given to work with.

The movie's biggest flaw, however, is its wasted potential. The idea of a powerful corporation exploiting a new technology for nefarious purposes is a compelling one, but it's handled in a heavy-handed and simplistic way that fails to explore the nuances and implications of such a scenario. The action scenes are few and far between, and when they do occur, they're poorly choreographed and lack any real tension or excitement. The special effects are also subpar, with the Psi-Comp Implant looking more like a cheap prop than a cutting-edge technological innovation. Despite its short runtime of 94 minutes, the movie feels overly long and plodding, with long stretches of boring exposition and unnecessary plot twists that add nothing to the story.

Overall, "Hardwired" is a disappointing and unoriginal sci-fi thriller that fails to live up to its promising premise. With its poor writing, lackluster action scenes, and wasted potential, it's a movie that's hard to recommend to anyone but the most die-hard fans of the genre. Even then, viewers may find themselves checking their watches and waiting for something, anything, to happen. With a TMDB rating of 5.027/10, it's clear that audiences have not been kind to this film, and for good reason. Unless you're a completist when it comes to sci-fi movies, there's no real reason to seek out "Hardwired" – there are far better films out there that explore similar themes and ideas with much more skill and sophistication.
