A Lackluster Sequel to a Horror Classic

WatchListHQSep 5, 2025
The 1998 film "I Still Know What You Did Last Summer" is a sequel to the moderately successful horror movie "I Know What You Did Last Summer", and unfortunately, it fails to live up to its predecessor's standards. The movie picks up where the first one left off, with Julie James still haunted by the memories of the Fisherman, whom she thought she had killed. The plot follows Julie and her friends as they embark on a trip to the Bahamas, where they hope to find some relaxation and fun. However, their vacation is soon disrupted by a series of gruesome murders, and Julie begins to suspect that the Fisherman may not be dead after all.

The main problem with "I Still Know What You Did Last Summer" is its predictable and formulaic plot. The movie relies heavily on horror cliches, with characters making foolish decisions and putting themselves in harm's way. The dialogue is also cheesy and lacks any real depth or emotion. The acting is subpar, with the exception of Jennifer Love Hewitt, who reprises her role as Julie James. She brings some level of credibility to the film, but even her performance is not enough to save the movie from its overall lack of quality. The supporting cast, including Freddie Prinze Jr. and Brandy, are forgettable and add nothing to the story.

Despite its flaws, "I Still Know What You Did Last Summer" does have some redeeming qualities. The movie's setting, a remote island in the Bahamas, provides a creepy and atmospheric backdrop for the horror that unfolds. The film's score is also effective in building tension and suspense, even if the plot itself is predictable. Additionally, the movie's themes of guilt, trauma, and revenge are interesting and could have been explored in more depth. However, the film's execution is lacking, and it ultimately fails to deliver on its promise of a thrilling and terrifying horror experience. Overall, "I Still Know What You Did Last Summer" is a skippable sequel that fails to live up to the standards set by its predecessor. Unless you're a die-hard fan of horror movies or are looking for a mindless, cheesy thrill, there's no real reason to watch this film.
