Sami Blood
Sameblod
Overview
Elle Marja, 14, is a reindeer-breeding Sami girl. Exposed to the racism of the 1930s and phrenological examinations at her boarding school, she starts dreaming of another life. To achieve this other life she has to become someone else and break all ties with her family and culture.

A Haunting Portrait of Identity and Assimilation: Unpacking the Emotional Depth of "Sami Blood"

The film's greatest strength lies in its thoughtful and nuanced portrayal of Elle Marja's inner turmoil, as she grapples with the contradictions of her own desires and the expectations placed upon her by her family and society. The cinematography is stark and beautiful, capturing the harsh yet breathtaking landscapes of northern Sweden, and the performances are uniformly excellent, with Lene Cecilia Sparrok delivering a standout turn as the troubled and determined Elle Marja. As the story unfolds, Kernell raises important questions about the nature of identity, culture, and belonging, and the ways in which these concepts are shaped by history, power, and social context.
One of the most striking aspects of "Sami Blood" is its unflinching examination of the ways in which racism and colonialism can be internalized and perpetuated, even by those who are most marginalized. Elle Marja's desire to escape her Sami heritage and assimilate into Swedish culture is a heartbreaking testament to the destructive power of oppression, and the ways in which it can erode a person's sense of self-worth and cultural pride. At the same time, the film is also a powerful celebration of Sami culture and resilience, and a testament to the enduring importance of preserving and honoring one's cultural heritage. Overall, "Sami Blood" is a haunting and deeply moving film that will linger in the minds of viewers long after the credits roll, and is a must-see for anyone interested in exploring the complexities of identity, culture, and social justice.
